PNGOUT

Friday, March 30th, 2007

I compressed the PNGs used on the Robert Eatman web site with PNGOUTWin. The “strategy” (a PNGOUT term) I used was Xtreme (slowest). Here are my results: 14 images with an original file size of 106KB reduced to 98.8KB. That yields a 7% savings from the original.

The results are a little skewed. One image accounts for 70% of the original total file size. When optimized, that image’s file size is 68.8KB, a 6% savings. This large image skews the results toward a lower percentage in savings but not by much. The other 13 images only had a 12% total savings.

In the grand scheme of compressing files to save bandwidth, this might not be worth it.
